Abstract
This investigation was a clinical intervention program, rooted in the theoretical literature of self-management, self-efficacy, and perceived sense of control. The program combined group and individual therapeutic interventions with a large number of subjects, who were residents in competently administered nursing home facilities, whose staffs provided a great deal of environmental stimulation. Staff training was an integral part of the intervention program. The research component included a minimal-treatment comparison group with behavioral observation and paper-and-pencil assessment measures. ANOVAs and MANOVAs, followed by discriminant analyses, were conducted on the data, to identify the most significant dimensions of the group differences. There was good convergent support, from almost all of the assessment measures, for significant improvement on a wide range of behaviors for the participants, from pre- to post-treatment assessment. The nursing home residents who dropped out of the treatment program showed significant decline at posttest on many of these same behaviors. The importance of field research is briefly discussed.
