Abstract
Expert and novice differences in judging and categorizing artistic styles were documented. Unlike previous studies on artistic style recognition, both quantitative and qualitative differences were found. In a multidimensional study using Italian Renaissance and Mannerist paintings as stimuli, experts used complex organizational dimensions of STYLE and COMPOSITION whereas novices used lower level concepts like NUMBER OF FIGURES, REALISM, and BACKGROUND/DETAIL. Multidimensional scaling and categorization results suggest that art history and art education subjects should be treated as separate populations in future aesthetics research. Categorization results supported the belief that additional categorization work using artistic styles would be worthwhile.
