Abstract
The UNIFIELD is a unary-serial SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Datapath) architecture; the unique features of this architecture are the unary representation that allows simple arithmetic operations to be performed in the same registers in which the numbers are stored, and, a novel interconnection scheme that allows any number of predefined permutations to be performed with no penalty in time. This architecture is suitable primarily for image processing, but may lend itself to non-orthogonal lattice solution, sparse matrix operations, and even cryptography. The UNIFIELD I, an 8 x 8, 2-decimal digit prototype (with 4 two-dimensional registers or modules), having 16 permutations, has been implemented in the Information Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Illinois.
