Abstract
Language-based editors offer to the user a number of advantages which accrue from their cognizance of the edited language. Foremost among these are the advantages of manipulating and traversing the edited document in terms of the syntactic structures of the document. Also automatic formatting and error-detection capabilities are afforded to the user through syntax-directed editors.
The advantages of language-based editors do not supersede, but rather need to augment the advantages of text editors. We present an interface that affords the user a dual conceptual framework of editing, i.e. both structural and textual. As structured editors are expensive in terms of space and time, ways are investigated to reduce the unnecessary costs. Incomplete grammars are examined and an implementation is offered which allows the users to specify grammars of interest partially.
An implementation which allows user-specification and partial specification of grammars is presented. The implementation affords all the simplicity and power of the textual model of editing, together with all the advantages of a language-cognizant interface in a language-independent fashion. Design questions for such an editor are examined and reported.
