Abstract
  • This is a study of the process of comprehending poetry, especially difficult poetry. The investigation analyzes the process of reading poetry for understanding by examining four categories of difficulty delineated by George Steiner. The skills of each category are identified along with their significance to the reading process. Examples are provided, and each category is also discussed in terms of its limitations.
  • Four themes structure the study. They are the nature of the process which governs the comprehension of poetry; the concept of mind that emerges from a consideration of this process; the effect of the ability to understand poetry on the development of the individual; and the effect of this process on society. The examples, skills, and significance of each category of difficulty are discussed in light of these themes.
