Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between the lower-division achievements and the subsequent upper-division academic performances of students in two plus two engineering technology programs. Those programs award an Associate degree after two years of study and a Baccalaureate degree after an additional two years of study. In order to examine the problem the study was designed to analyze student academic performance data from engineering technology two plus two programs.
The sample consisted of students enrolled in the Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology Department at the Purdue University West Lafayette campus during the 1978 to 1984 time period. The independent variables consisted of lower-division student academic data. The dependent variable was the student's upper-division grade point average.
Statistical tests for normality and distribution characteristics followed by tests for linear and multiple regression were performed on the data. The multiple regression analysis identified only one of the predictor variables as being statistically significant. Lower-division grade point average was found to be the best predictor of upper-division academic performance.
