Abstract
  • Available literature on organizational change offers little specific theory or illustrative case description to guide the planned organizational change efforts of continuing higher education administrators. Especially lacking in the case literature are explorations of less than fully successful change attempts.
  • Utilizing naturalistic case study methodology, this study examines two attempts to establish graduate adult degree programs at a major public research university. One of the attempts resulted in the establishment of an active program, while the other program was never actually implemented. The study describes the cases in detail and relates the particulars of the cases of major prescriptions offered in current planned change literature. Analysis is based upon data collected through interviews and documents.
  • The study provides a discussion of the importance of goals, leadership, and rewards in the two cases and concludes with implications for continuing higher education practice and further research.
