Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore educational programs, if any, that would offer post-secondary bilingual-bicultural education to Hispanic adults in the city of Chicago. In order to gather the necessary background for the study, pertinent literature was researched from both fields, i.e., adult education and bilingual-bicultural education. The research approach to this study was exploratory in nature and was defined as "naturalistic research." Four research units were chosen and treated as four individual case-studies. The case-study approach was chosen since it offered the possibility for studying the processes and interactions as they occurred.
The data were collected by interview, using open-ended questions. A questionnaire was developed for each of the following categories: (1) administrators, (2) instructors, and (3) students. The interviews were conducted in the language of preference of the interviewee. The results were classified, tabulated, and studied, through the use of content analysis.
The results of the study showed that adult bilingual-bicultural education at the post-secondary level was present in the city of Chicago, although to a minor scale. The programs' participants considered that adult bilingual-bicultural education was a sensible and useful approach, as an alternative educational program. Due to the generality of this research study, specific aspects of the educational process have not been included. Further research in this area is needed, if the relationship among variables associated with curriculum and the specific educational needs of the target population are to be examined.
