Abstract
This study was designed to assess the effect of a package of prefeeding therapies and the use of jaw stabilization feeding techniques on the time required to feed severely handicapped children, as well as the effect this program package had on food consumption and interfering oral-motor behaviors. A second purpose of the study centered around the visual effect of the feeding technique as determined by a panel of naive observers. This external validation was designed to evaluate the program's effectiveness with regard to the overall appearance of the children during the feeding experience.
The results of this investigation showed overall increases in food consumed, decreased behavioral interference and a slight increase in time required to feed each subject. Observational data showed positive changes in overall appearance.
