Abstract
This dissertation research focuses on development and evaluation of an efficient solution algorithm for a nonlinear three dimensional urban activity model. Specifically, Kim's urban activity model of land use intensity and transportation congestion is empirically applied to the Chicago metropolitan region.
To apply the model to the large-scale urban system, an efficient solution algorithm is developed by combining Evans' algorithm with Powell's hybrid method. The performances of the model and solution algorithm are evaluated by comparing the solutions to the current urban development patterns in terms of zonal land values, intensity of land uses represented by building height, zonal export amounts, and interzonal transportation demand. Evaluations of practical applications of this model are also undertaken with respect to the network changes and sectoral growth for the future.
