Abstract
The present study seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the short narrative and the literary article of Gabriel Miro by examining his collected works as well as a substantial body of literary pieces published in newspapers and magazines and still ungathered.
Early short stories, including those that appeared in El Imparcial and El Heraldo de Madrid in the column entitled "Del huerto provinciano," and the articles published in Catalan newspapers such as El Diario de Barcelona, La Vanguardia and La Publicidad have been organized into two major divisions according to their genre and further classified in regard to their narrative, descriptive, expository and other aspects. The study of the literary article offers through Miro's literary criticism of contemporary and past authors a useful approach to the study of his own aesthetic principles. It also reveals certain affinities among Miro and the writers of the Generation of 1898, specially with Azorin, Valle-Inclan and Unamuno. On dealing with aspects of literature and everyday Spanish life, Miro touched upon many of the vital problems of Spain that concerned this Generation although his attitude never fully coincided with their ideology. The use of a wide variety of narrative techniques and structures in Miro's literary articles, clearly reveals the closely knit inter-relationships among biography, literary criticism, cultural history and fiction that constitute an integral part of his originality. Both the short stories and the articles acquire in Miro a highly personal stamp in regard to standard generic classifications. He gave to his jornadas, glosas, platicas and estampas the familiarity and intimacy of his own voice as he addressed his select audience in a powerful language with poetic overtones capable of transforming the most everyday subject into art. The same divergence from genre prescriptions is a constant feature of his short fiction. From the traditional picturesque or costumbrista sketches of "Del huerto provinciano," Miro moves toward a more idyllic and stylized representation of the region of Levante. In his descriptions of people, nature, landscape and daily objects he evolves from the minute observation characteristic of realism and naturalism to a primitive vision of great affective intensity that illuminates the old realities with a spirituality that closely approximates him to the poetical metaphysics of magic realism. The development of Miro's imaginative structures from the level of comparison and objective references to the abstraction of the metaphor transforms his later short stories and vignettes into beautiful examples of modern symbolism. The selections found in El angel, el molino, el caracol del faro and Anos y leguas are the most poetic pieces of all of Miro's literary production. This modern use of the metaphor is precisely the feature which Miro, like Juan Ramon Jimenez, shares with the new generation of poets of the Generation of 1927, especially with Jorge Guillen, Pedro Salinas and Gerardo Diego.
The study of Miro's literary articles, short stories and ageneric pieces as they first appeared in newspapers and early collections provides great insight into the evolution of Miro's themes and prose artistry. The literary theory and sociological references used in this work allows the opportunity to link Miro to the main literary movements and tendencies of the period, not as an isolated figure, but rather as a writer both highly aware of the leading developments of his time and truly innovative.
