Abstract
  • This thesis is divided into three essays which address policy issues in the area of international trade. The first essay again poses the old question of whether a transfer of some of its endowment by a country could benefit the transferor. It is for the first time rigorously shown that in a two-country model, any transfer of a commodity must make the transferor worse off. On the other hand, an example is presented which shows that in a three-country model, the transferor may benefit. Since the model is an exchange economy type, the last section of the essay discusses the possibility of extending exchange economy results to include certain production economies.
  • Essay B is composed of a three country international trade model with three commodities and three factors, where one factor--capital--is internationally mobile. The conditions under which the formation of common market by two of the countries causes a flow of capital to them are derived and discussed.
  • The last essay of the thesis characterizes the properties of tariff and quota liberalization negotiations in a largely graphical and game-theoretic manner. Efficient modes of liberalization and efficient final solutions are found and implications for international negotiations presented.
