Abstract
This annotated bibliography lists sixty-eight biographies and autobiographies by black women which can be used in secondary school classes in English and American Literature. The selections are arranged according to the careers of the women author/subjects and, within these broad career categories, listings are by date and chronology. Suggestions for reading level interest are given for each listed work, and there is also some effort made to suggest the level of literary appeal of each work.
The principal merit of these biographies and autobiographies is that they all suggest how their subject/authors successfully coped and survived within a culture and in a society that was essentially hostile to them because of their ethnic and sexual identity. Thus, these works suggest potential role models for female high school students, especially those attending inner-city urban schools.
