Abstract
"Sparta (Randolph County) has a temperate continental climate, dominated by maritime tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico from about April through November and by air from the Pacific during the remaining months. Gulf air generally supports relative humidities of about 60% during the day and 85% at night. This is the airmass which yields a warm to hot, ""muggy"" environment, particularly from May through October. There are occasional, brief interruptions of drier, cooler air from the Pacific Ocean, but they typically only last a few days. The climate of southern Illinois is decidedly less wintery than that of northern Illinois, in both intensity and duration."
