Mt. Vernon has a temperate continental climate, with a wide range of temperature throughout the year. The characteristic Summer is very hot, usually humid with high rainfall variability from year to year. The characteristic Winter has occasional severe cold spells, but is basically milder than the winters in Central and Northern Illinois. Winter precipitation usually occurs as rain rather than snow.
