Kankakee is an industrial and commercial center in the northeastern portion of central Illinois, and serves as the county seat for Kankakee County. The course of the Kankakee River passes through the city, and the local topography varies from flat to gently undulating. Most of the surrounding area is an old lake plain which is responsible for the sandy soils and the poor drainage in certain nearby areas.
