Carbondale is largely an educational community, the home of Southern Illinois University. Carbondale lies in eastern Jackson County, at the northern edge of the Shawnee Hills Physiographic Section. This section of relatively small hills extends west-east across southern Illinois and serves as a minor barrier between the generally flat terrain of central and northern Illinois and the flat coastal plain that extends from the Gulf of Mexico northward into extreme southern Illinois. The topography has only a minor effect on the weather.
