Charleston is an agricultural and educational center, the home of Eastern Illinois University, and is the county seat for Coles County. Charleston is located on the broad Shelbyville Moraine which separates the physiographic areas known as the Bloomington Ridged Plain and the Springfield Plain. The surrounding topography is primarily a flat plain with no major hills or deep valleys. The topography has no effect on the weather or climate of Charleston.
