Abstract
There has been a distinct lack of available information regarding the energy requirements and costs for electric equipment auxiliary to the heating system in schools. Estimates used in operating cost studies have varied considerably. The electric auxiliaries of two gas-heated schools were metered during an investigation of the value of insulation in school buildings and the data for the calendar year 1966 are summarized in this report. A summary of the results is shown in Table III, page 12. It is significant to note that the annual cost of operating the boiler circulating pumps was found to be less than one-half cent per square foot. This is substantially less than the 1. 5 to 3 cents often used for estimating purposes. The total cost of operating the heating auxiliaries was between 0. 95 cents and 1. 21 cents per square foot not including the operation of exhaust fans. The remainder of the report gives a description of the buildings, metering procedures, and methods used to calculate costs.
