Abstract
This thesis investigates student learning through practice exams. A series of experiments were
conducted using a web-based platform that provided students with an organized structure to study past exam problems. We establish the learning obtained from doing these practice exams (Chapter 1) and then manipulate the feedback mechanisms (Chapter 2 and 4) and duration of the treatment
(Chapter 3). The results show that all students bene t from practice exams and worked out solution
feedback. However, investing more resources in this learning tool might not result in better learning
gains. A comparison between experiments suggests that, beyond the quality of the practice exams
and solution feedback, motivation and learning goals may be crucial to enhancing student learning
during exam preparation.
