- Abstract
- This thesis presents the theoretical background and the full-wave analysis of metallic structures at optical frequencies. The optical properties of metals and the related plasmonic effects are reviewed. Both the frequency-domain and time-domain methods for simulating the structures are discussed. The finite element method is applied to study the scattering from the metallic structures in the frequency domain. The simulation results are shown for two-dimensional structures that include infinitely long metallic cylinders with various cross sections at optical frequencies. The discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method is implemented to study metallic structures at optical frequencies. The formulation of the DGTD method is derived to include the dispersive material models for the metals. Efficient implementations of the DGTD method for studying periodic structures are also realized. The simulation results of applying the DGTD method to model and simulate two-dimensional metallic devices at optical frequencies are presented for both stand-alone and periodic structures.
