- Abstract
- This document presents an overview of the XSEDE architecture. XSEDE has defined this architecture in concert with broad stakeholder consultation to understand the use cases and requirements of our researchers and scientists. First, we provide a brief review of XSEDE and how researchers and scientists use XSEDE. Next, we identify and describe six XSEDE system-wide functions: identity management, interactive login, remote file access, submitting and managing computations, transferring datasets, and discovering and providing resource information. Each function is supported by three principal layers of the architecture: the access layer, which facilitates the use of resources via a range of end-‐user-‐oriented and programmer-oriented interfaces; the service layer, which negotiates access to resources via well-‐defined network protocols; and the resource layer, which encompasses the diverse physical and virtual resources provided by XSEDE service providers. Finally, we identify and describe the specific interfaces provided by the access layer to enable each function
