- Abstract
- Imagine peering through the helmet visor as this firefighter does. Much like our current understanding of cognitive functioning of firefighters in live-fire maneuvers, the view is clouded. This not only depicts the view from the firefighters visor into the darkness of a fire scene, but also the state of research on cognitive performance of firefighters on the job. It is difficult to measure human cognitive performance in extreme environments, for many reasons. The environment of the firefighter is hot, dangerous, and volatile, and multiple variables are at play. Physical, mental, and emotional stresses are placed on these individuals during scenarios in which poor decision making performance could mean injury, or worse, fatality. It is my goal to arrive at an understanding of how the executive control processes of working memory and inhibitory control are affected by the stresses of firefighting and which individual difference characteristics (physical fitness, trait emotionality, experience, etc.) could be related to optimal cognitive behavior. I will begin by furthering our knowledge of immediately post-firefighting behavioral performance from simple, reaction time paradigms to more complex cognitive tasks and begin pilot examination of decision making performance during live-fire maneuvers.
