- Abstract
- Every substance has it unique barcode Raman spectrum. Raman spectroscopy has broad applications in areas such as disease diagnosis, food safety, forensics and archaeology. However, due to the weak signal intensity of Raman spectrum, sophisticated and bulky equipment like spectrometer and laser are needed for detection. To detect Raman spectrum of molecules with low concentration, such as DNA and proteins, a Raman-enhancement substrate is needed in addition to the equipment. However, it is difficult to produce high-enhancement and large-area substrate with high throughput. This image demonstrates the Raman detection system including two parts of my research. One part is the portable hand-held Raman detector looks like a regular barcode scanner. The other part is the wavy golden substrate whose structural size is exaggerated. The large-area, high-uniformity substrate is made with our specialized nanotechnology. The grass-like stuff on the substrate is biomolecule such as DNA or protein, whose size is also exaggerated. The inset image in the up-right corner shows a micro-array of analytes printed on our substrate. The overall concept of this artwork is doing Raman micro-array assay with our hand-held Raman detector and substrate as easy as scanning barcode at in-store checkout.
