- Abstract
- The image shows how a particular protein, named F-BAR domain, works in teams to bend flat cellular membrane into tubules. To generate organelles, eukaryotic cells sculpt their membranes into compartments, often employing proteins as chaperones, for example, F-BAR domains. The latter induce formation of tubular and vesicular membranes. To generate large membrane curvatures, cells arrange F-BAR domain proteins in lattices on the surface of cellular membranes. F-BAR domain lattices collectively generate large membrane curvatures and play important function in sculpting cellular compartments. The membrane sculpting process has been simulated with molecular dynamics simulations on super computers with NAMD and VMD.
