- Abstract
- Planarians are freshwater flatworms that possess remarkable regenerative abilities, and are able to regenerate whole animals from small tissue fragments. My research in the Newmark lab is focused on identifying genes that play a role in the regeneration and development of germ cells in the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea. This is a fluorescent image depicting a cross-section of testes lobules in the planarian S. editerraneana. This image was taken using a laser scanning confocal microscope, which enables scientists to visualize fluorescently labeled cells. The collection of blue dots in the center of each lobe are the elongating spermatids and sperm, while the surrounding green border labels the actively-dividing spermatogonia, which will give rise to mature sperm after several rounds of cell division. I took the picture this year after my first semester working in the lab, and it reminds me that beauty can be found in unlikely places.
