Abstract

After spending two weeks researching the cultural landscape of Varanasi in northern India, it became undeniably evident to me that there is more to the scene than what just meets the eye. Varanasi is full of rich culture and history. Furthermore, it is considered to be the Oldest Living City in the world. Many native people of India will move here to live the rest of their lives in this sacred landscape. As can be seen in the image, families will live in mud houses that have to be rebuilt every year due to flooding of the Ganga River. Pollution will be found throughout the entire city of Varanasi. The landscape is bare and eroded. Regardless of the poverty and poor living conditions, people crowd this city, making it there home and living in it from day to day. They are just happy that they can be part of the landscape and its holiness. Seeing that, as part of my research, I explored ways to enhance the landscape and organize the movement of the complex city.
