Abstract

My submission From One Mutation to Another is a visual representation of how mutations have changed all living things throughout history and will continue to change all things in the future. This image shows me examining an Arabidopsis thaliana mutation that is ready to be planted. As you can see, I have blue eyes. Blue eyes are a mutation that occurred in humans long ago, a recessive trait to brown eye color. Although the blue coloration does not necessarily give me an evolutionary leg up in the present, it is a lasting reminder that one mutation can change an entire species. The scientific community strives to understand genetics and continually seeks to use them as learning tools. This particular plant is used to test and understand climate change, an important factor to all life. The tiny fragile seedling in my tweezers is the future of genetic mutations.
