- Abstract
- Traditional rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have arguably reached the pinnacle of their power and energy density, therefore alternative chemistries are being explored in order to achieve large increases in both aforementioned metrics. My research has focused on characterizing deposition morphologies of magnesium metal for high energy density magnesium-ion batteries. Shown here is an electro-deposited micro-particle of magnesium using a scanning electron microscope. The large contrast is due in part to a thin, insulating layer on top of the particle preventing electrons from escaping quickly from the surface (further brightness and contrast being optimized before acquisition). Personally, this evokes a sense of both the power (and therefore responsibility) that the spectroscopist has over the representation of any sample as well as a metaphysical struggle to sense true phenomena versus merely shadows on a wall.
