Abstract

Images of research often portray the product, the idea, or the result of research, but I believe just as important is the individual experience. Here at The Beckman Institute, countless hours are spent each year collecting, analyzing, visualizing, interpreting, and presenting data from our research. Lost in this process, though, is the experience of performing research and the day to day struggle to perfect a technique. This is what I set out to capture – an image of my research. The above result is a compilation of images of my workbench taken over the course of one year (Dec. 12, 2012 – Dec. 17, 2013). In total, 6,472 images were taken from a webcam mounted in my lab space. These images captured a dynamic and ever-changing environment. Over the past year, I have built several different laser imaging systems to utilize advanced computed imaging techniques capable of resolving individual rods and cones inside the living human eye. Present in the compilation are copies of myself performing common tasks such as aligning optics, previewing data on the computer, stepping back to ponder my next step, and also discussing a new setup with my advisor, Prof. Stephen Boppart (captured in the bottom left).
