- Abstract
- I research the history and production of jewelry and textiles. These objects are situated within a cultural framework dependent upon the symbolic meaning, historical significance, and market value of material from which they're made. The relationships between gender, value, material, and process intrigue me as an artist and craftsperson. My primary work area is a 1920s Singer sewing machine which I use to sew, draw, and make small objects. I collect vintage and antique needlepoint, lace, costume jewelry, and catalogues of fine contemporary jewelry. Through research and observation I gain insight into regional and universal signifiers that often transcend time and place. The objects conceived from these contemplations engage images, materials, and processes which act to enforce gender stereotypes. Ultimately my work offers a contemporary interpretation of convention.
