Abstract

The corner of Illinois and Lincoln is a primary crossroads for those traveling to and from Urbana and the University. More bicycle/auto accidents, resulting in injury, occur here than at any other intersection in Urbana. Urban planners classify Illinois St. as a complete-street because it incorporates user-specific infrastructures including bicycle lanes, transit stops, auto lanes, and pedestrian sidewalks. This street designation terminates at Lincoln with Lincoln serving primarily automobiles. Three graduate researchers are preparing a comprehensive analysis of existing bicycle routes,associated street design, safety measures, and recommendations for bicycle-oriented intersections and corridors for the Champaign-Urbana area. Five years of bicycle ridership and route data combined with five years of congruent bicycle accident data are studied to identify routes most frequently traveled, routes with a higher probability of bicycle-auto accidents, past infrastructure improvement and associated increased safety. Finally, design upgrades are recommend for intersections and corridors with the greatest potential for increased safeties in and around the University District. Results will be presented at the annual International Making Cities Livable Conference in Portland, Oregon in June 2014.
