- Abstract
- My work investigates the relationship between absence and presence. I am interested in what remains intangibly present in the form of memories. Though we might feel as if people and things are absent, our knowledge and recognition of what is missing acts as a state of preservation. But what of that which can no longer be remembered; shadowy memories that are just out of reach, forgotten memories? Does the acknowledgment of a faded memory become a double presence, or double absence? My work acts as a stand in, a reference to something that once was. My work allows the physical absence to be seen, acknowledged, and communicated, like a memory still allows what is absent to be present. The art of making constitutes a large part of my research. Repetitive motions are required in my work; hours are spent sawing, filing, and sanding, relying on my muscle memory to guide me as I manipulate material. Through making I enter a Zen like state where I work through the concepts, theories, and questions relating to my work. The time spent methodically removing material allows my work to take physical form. The selected absence of the material allows the work to become present.
