- Abstract
- This is a single image cartoon that visualizes the core concepts of my dissertation research on the incorporation of the comics medium into interactive online learning environments. The image is slightly off register so as to display red, green, and blue, the three colors of the RGB additive color model output by digital displays, and thus the model specified in web design and online comics creation. The visual allusion to screen displays signifies the move between and overlap of comics in the print and digital mediums. A growing body of educational research points to an overlap between the multiple visual and textual literacies engaged by interaction both comics and new media. This overlap is represented in the image by the overlapping thought balloons coming from the heads of the two figures. Based on these concepts, I have gathered and am in the process of analyzing multiple online interactive educational environments that integrate the characteristics of print comics with the unique affordances of new media design, such as hypertextuality, audio, video, and branching (i.e. choose-your-own-adventure) narratives. The goal of this analysis is to explicate the pedagogical affordances and constraints of comics in online pedagogical texts.
