Abstract

International service-learning and the prospect of international travel has drawn students from diverse engineering disciplines to participate in both curricular and co-curricular projects. Conducting research on the skills, attitudes, and knowledge that students gain from these international experiences, it has been revealed that students have the potential to learn not only advanced technical skills, but also gain a framework for community-based development, project management, and intercultural awareness and communication. When plunged into an international context students are compelled to learn these skills and adapt quickly. But what students often reveal after traveling is that the holistic experience and the people that they encounter helped to cultivate deep personal growth, including: self identity, self confidence, leadership, teamwork, and a larger sense of responsibility. I hope to better articulate the learning that occurs on international-service learning trips, such as the site assessment trip to Mali for a water distribution and filtration project showcased in this photo, and how this learning can be taught within the domestic classroom.
