Abstract

This image shows two Plexlines, representing two different children with different levels of communicative engagement during a social play session. The visualization on the top shows that the child is engaging through different types of behaviors, gestures (green) and gaze (blue) in particular. In the bottom Plexline, the child shows no gaze toward the examiner, a warning sign for developmental delay. Plexlines are part of a large research project in behavioral imaging, wherein I take the data produced by our collaborators and transform them into graphical visualizations. A Plexline is a scan analogous to an X-ray of a persons social and communicative behavior. Behavior is represented through use of color coded circles categorized into gaze, gesture, and speech laid out along a timeline. Currently, child behavioral data are often stored in raw text files or as spreadsheets, making it difficult to spot patterns and outliers. By transforming textual data into graphical visualizations, clinicians and researchers are able to make comparisons and interpretations at a glance that they can't make through traditional processes.
