- Abstract
- The exchange of musical ideas between Jazz and Gospel music has been a fluid language of import and export in Chicago, dating back to the 1920's. Both styles of music have strong roots and many origins in Chicago's south side neighborhoods. Dating back to Thomas Dorsey's late night and early morning gigs in the 1920's, Chicago musicians have crossed genres bringing information between musical styles.Today, many night musicians playing Jazz on Saturday night wake up early for their Sunday morning church gig. Charles Heath, pictured, is both an international touring jazz artist performing at the Kennedy Center, and a church musician at Triedstone Full Gospel Church on Chicago's south side. While the styles of music are considered separate genres by society, the languages of Jazz and Gospel music have remained dependent on each other for creativity, spirit, and innovation.
