Abstract

Jose, is a sculptural tower that is a portrait of a Hispanic immigrant male body that has become displaced post-immigration. The title of this piece situates the body within a stigmatized notion of a Hispanic male. The name Jose, is embedded with religious iconography pertaining to Hispanic culture. The dominant imagined image of masculinity in Hispanic culture is sustained through religion and patriarchal dominance. The masculine roles within the social structures of Hispanic culture and identity change once families become transnational post-immigrating to the United States. As a result, this structure stands as a displaced body that has been exhaustively covered with luscious confection and substances that become bordered landscapes within the towering body. The structure is filled with 50 million M&Ms which is a metaphor for the 50 million displaced immigrants the currently live in the United States. It stands as a critique of the masculine displaced immigrant body.
