Abstract
Algae — microscopic, free-floating plants — play an important role in aquatic ecosystems and have a direct effect on the health of these systems. Through their photosynthetic processes, algae use carbon dioxide, converting it to organic matter and oxygen (figure 1). Algae are important sources of dissolved oxygen in a water impoundment and constitute the basic building blocks of the
aquatic food chain. They cause water quality problems only when they proliferate so much that they upset the ecological balance.
