Abstract
The great rivers and lakes were the first pathways into the wilderness. These paths led to Illinois — by the Mississippi on the west, the Ohio and Wabash on the south and east, and Lake Michigan on the northeast. The
state was shaped by these tremendous border waters. Crisscrossing its broad prairies were other major waterways. In all, Illinois has more than 2,700 interior streams.
