Abstract
Insects are fairly low on the food chain. Their imaging system, the arthropod eye, which is their critical component to evade predators, has been evolving continuously to adapt and survive. The result is a remarkably sophisticated and unique class of imaging system. This system has a wide field of view, low aberrations, high acuity to motion and an infinite depth of field. With the biological understanding of the arthropod eye, we have created an imaging system lens with the advantages of the arthropod eye. In this lens system, compound apposition layouts of the arthropod eye in a nearly spherical form are the essential requirements, and we present a full hemispherical shaped lens (about 160 degrees). On the surface, imaging elements (artificial ommatidia) are densely populated, and this device combines elastomeric compound optical elements with deformable arrays of thin silicon photodectors into integrated sheets that can be elastically transformed from the planar geometries.
