Davis, Emeritus Professor of History at SSU/UIS, retired after 39 years of teaching and at Sangamon State University and its succesor, University of Illinois at Springfield. He was hired in 1970 as a charter member of the SSU faculty, some of whom he describes as “de-frocked priests” and “refugees from the campus battles of the 1960s.” Davis started the Oral History Office at SSU in 1971 as a means to collect and preserve historical evidence of groups such as women, minorities, and the poor.
