Abstract
The dynamics of insolation condition have an effect on the performance and energy output of
photovoltaic (PV) systems. Therefore, it is sensible to monitor the output performance of a PV system
on the sub-module level under real-time insolation conditions. However, measurements of the PV
module so far are often conducted either under standard test conditions (STC) where insolation lacks
diversity, or at a power grid level where the characteristics of individual modules are ignored. To
compensate for the shortage of data in the area of sub-module measuring under real-time condition, a
method of field measurement setup was developed. The method involves automated control of
measurement instruments as well as automated data acquisition and manipulation. From examination
of the interaction between measurement instruments and operating systems, a general-purpose control
circuit and program were developed for field measurement. Measurement results were then analyzed
with possible insolation variations, and certain output patterns under similar insolation conditions were
compared and categorized for future application. The research and programming done within the scope
of this project will facilitate an effective performance evaluation of various PV modules under realistic
conditions.
