Abstract
The ultimate goal of this project is to fabricate a transparent display unit that is also totally flexible. To reach this goal, the replica molding technique was used to pattern polymers on the substrates. The idea is to use the ultraviolet light from the plasma generated within the channels created by replica molding to excite the dyes to generate visible light. Extensive experiments and testing were conducted to optimize the performance of the microplasma device, which is the key to the whole display device. An array of cylindrical cavities connected by channels of 200 m was fabricated by the replica molding technique. The plasma was formed by the electrodes located below and above the cavities, and discharges were observed at various pressures of noble gases. Discharge performance in various gas mixtures will be discussed and the feasibility of creating a completely flexible and transparent display will be presented.
