Abstract
The characteristics of the underwater acoustic communications channel compromise the performance of conventional equalization and decoding techniques. Such characteristics include the Doppler fading and spread of the channel and a large delay spread which leads to a longer reverberation time, resulting in channel lengths that are relatively greater than those of wireless radio (electromagnetic) channels. Conventional adaptive algorithms have been applied to equalized data. However this study also examines how interactive turbo-equalization works for underwater channels. Previous equalizers perform the equalization and the decoding separately, while turbo-equalization methods perform both operations at the same time. The experimental data is obtained from experiments conducted at Martha's Vineyard Coastal Laboratory in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
