Abstract
The current price and size of hospital diagnostic equipment presents an obstacle
to the diagnosis and treatment of disease in environments where either
the cost or portability of equipment is a primary concern. In this project, we
have begun to use MEMS technologies to develop a compact-disc based bio-
sensing device that would bring cost-effective point of care disease detection
capabilities to any location with a CD reading drive.
Ultimately, we will accomplish this by tagging antigen-antibody reactions
on the CD surface with microspheres. This will corrupt the data that is
read from the CD, which will allow us to detect the presence of a disease
in a fluid sample. Specifically, this thesis focuses on characterizing the error
rate that is caused by varying amounts of microspheres on the CD surface.
This will allow us to design reaction chambers of an optimal size for disease
detection.
