Abstract
Past research performed at the University of Illinois has led to a novel antenna
device called the compound reconfigurable antenna (CRA). The CRA has the
ability to operate at two frequencies along with the ability to change its radiation
pattern in three directions. It achieves this by adding or removing electrical length
to the antennas elements through the use of diode switches and varactor diodes.
Other research performed at the University of Illinois has identified a novel ground
plane slot structure used to improve isolation between cosited antennas.
This research simplifies the CRA by using the isolating slot structure to adjust
the electrical distance between adjacent elements. The frequency dependence of
the slot structure adds electrical length at only one of the two operating frequencies. This allows the removal of the varactor diode which simplifies the design
of the CRA. Simulations along with measurements of a fabricated device will be
presented.
