Abstract
Optical therapy for the treatment of medical conditions is an area of great interest to the scientific and medical community. Psoriasis is a skin disease which is believed to affect over 1% of the world population and, in many cases, causes a severe reduction in the quality of life. Low dose exposure of the infected area to UV light has been shown to cause remission in psoriasis patients. For treatment a low-cost hand-held UV generating light is desirable. We have pursued production of such a lamp by using a DBD plasma in a deuterium and nitrogen atmosphere. The lamp uses a glass substrate with micro-cavities etched by abrasive powder blasting and a UV transparent PMMA window. Spectral data has been collected showing light output in the UV range. The devices are lightweight (several ounces) and can be hand held to allow exposure to any infected area of the skin.
