Abstract
We developed a program to estimate the ionospheric electron density profiles by inverting the actual ionograms. Although the program is not yet complete, and there is room for further improvement, this program would find a way to infer the shape and characteristics of the ionosphere from the ionograms, and when combined with other methods, it would be able to provide a simple yet powerful solution. The program uses a model-and-matching process. We first generate a random, yet reasonable, ionosphere according to the ionosphere model we created. Once the random ionosphere has been generated, we create the ionogram for that ionosphere using the dispersion relations for the waves in anisotropic materials. After we generate the ionogram, we compare our result with the actual ionogram for any modifications needed. By comparison with the actual data, we make changes in our ionosphere model to come up with an ionogram that fits well with the given data. It can than be assumed that the ionosphere model we have would be similar to the real-life ionosphere of the given data.
