Presented here is the design and present status of a low-temperature ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (LT-UHV-STM). This system can reach temperatures as low as <10 K; greatly enhancing the resolution of the topographic and spectroscopy data collected. Different from existing LT-UHV-STMs, this system is cooled by a closed-cycle refrigerator rather than a Dewar of liquid helium. This would enable longer experiment durations and reduce the costs of operation, as there would be no need to constantly replenish the supply of liquid helium in the system. Topics covered include design of the LT-UHV-STM system and installation of the refrigerator as well as assembly of the microscope system and the test results.
